Notes

Prosím can appear before or after the request and is usually set off by commas. With direct address, use prosím tě (informal) or prosím vás (formal/plural). It commonly softens imperatives or requests framed with mohl bys/ste…?.

Examples

  • Please pass me the salt.
  • Could you please advise me?
  • Please close the window.

Notes

Prosím is a short, neutral reply to thanks. Alternatives include Není zač (“don’t mention it”) or Rádo se stalo (“my pleasure”). Often used alone as a full turn.

Examples

  • Thank you. — You’re welcome.
  • Thanks for the help! — You’re welcome, my pleasure.
  • Thanks a lot! — Don’t mention it. / You’re welcome.

Notes

Used with rising intonation and a question mark when you did not hear/understand. Variants: „Jak prosím?“ (Sorry, what?).

Examples

  • Sorry? Could you repeat that?
  • Sorry, what? I didn’t hear.
  • Pardon? Once again, slowly.

Used when giving or presenting something to someone. Often combined with deictic words like tady (“here”).

Examples

  • Here you are.
  • Here you go, your coffee.
